FORT ERIE, Ontario (AP) — Shillelagh Slew won the $445,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on Sunday after a stewards inquiry bumped first-place finisher Malakoff to fifth for interference down the final stretch.
Four horses broke neck-in-neck toward the finish line in the second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, with Malakoff pulling away for the apparent victory.
But the inquiry was announced almost immediately after the race and jockey Todd Kabel was found to have caused interference. The punishment was a drop down four spots.
That gave Shillelagh Slew, whose jockey Dino Luciani also launched a complaint against Kabel, the victory. At 8-1 odds, he returned $9.70, $5.40 and $4.40.
Edenwold, seeking to become the eighth horse to win the Canadian Triple Crown, ended up fourth after initially placing fifth at Fort Erie on a searing day that left the 1 1-16-mile track fast and firm.
Edenwold won the Queen’s Plate at Toronto’s Woodbine Race Track on June 25 by three-quarters of a length.
The final jewel in the Triple Crown is the Aug. 6 Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine.
