DUBAI, United Arab Emirates- UAE Derby champ Discreet Cat has been ruled out of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 6.
Godolphin’s highly rated colt, who was a 7-1 chance with Stan James to win America’s most famous race, will instead be shipped to the U.S. and stabled at Belmont Park, where he will be prepared for some of the major races in the second half of the season.
The son of Forestry took his unbeaten record to three with an impressive victory in the UAE Derby last month, having been bought by Godolphin following his debut success at Saratoga in August.
“Discreet Cat is a really promising young horse, but after assessing the situation, Sheikh Mohammed has decided that he would prefer to give him more time,” racing manager Simon Crisford told the stable’s website, godolphin.com. “We see him as an important horse for Godolphin both later this season and next year.
“He won’t actually be three until May, so we want to give him time to develop. Although we have no specific targets in mind for him at the moment, Discreet Cat will not be running in any of the Triple Crown races.”
Santa Anita Derby winner Brother Derek is 11-4 favorite to win the Kentucky Derby 2006 crwon, while Arkansas Derby winner Lawyer Ron is next best at 5-1.
