Ireland-bred Dark Islander, ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr., won in his American debut Saturday, beating Obrigado by 1 lengths in the $150,000 Oak Tree Derby at Santa Anita.
Dark Islander was last in the field of six in the early going, moved up to fourth on the turn and took the lead at the top of the stretch, covering 1 1-8 miles on turf in 1:46 1-5.
The John Hills trained colt paid $8.80, $4.60 and $2.60. Obrigado paid $3 and $2.40. A.P. Warrior, the favorite, was third and paid $2.20 to show.
Dark Islander’s previous nine starts were in England. He earned $90,000 for Saturday’s win, taking his lifetime bankroll to $178,352.
