Calder Race Course opens its 2006 season Tuesday, April 25 and will hold racing each week through Jan. 2. This marks the 35th racing season for the race track. The thoroughbred track in Miami Gardens will not hold live racing April 26 and 27.
Starting, April 28, though, Calder is to be open for live racing each Friday through Tuesday until July 21. Then, it is to hold races three days a week, Fridays through Sundays, until Aug. 27.
Beginning Sept. 1, Calder is to resume racing at least five days a week through Jan. 2.Then through Oct. 15, Calder’s first race is to be at 12:50 p.m. each day, with gates open for fans at 11:30 a.m. Starting Oct. 16, races are to begin at 12:25 p.m. and gates are to open at 11 a.m.
Calder is to show simulcast races from other thoroughbred tracks seven days a week through Jan. 2.
Calder’s feature programs are to include the Summit of Speed on July 15. Stakes races that day are to include the $500,000 Princess Rooney Handicap, which the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association upgraded to Grade I status from Grade II.
The race is to be the first Grade I stakes at Calder.
The racing association grades stakes races, from III to the highest level of I, based on how top finishers have performed in subsequent races. Owners and trainers like to run horses in Grade I races because they usually have large purses and top finishes can help increase horses sales prices and breeding fees after they finish racing.
Calder’s other biggest stakes race day is the Festival of the Sun, scheduled for Oct. 14.
Calder is a subsidiary of Churchill Downs (NASDAQ: CHDN) of Louisville, Ky.
