A must-know for genuine fans of horse racing events, picks, and tips, horse betting and wagering, and horse handicapping towards the end of March each year is the Dubai World Cup, dubbed as the world's richest horse race with its total purse of US$6,000,000. The Dubai World Cup is a Grade I stakes race for three year old and four year old thoroughbred horses, run at a distance of 2,000 miles (10 furlongs) on the dirt. The Kentucky Derby itself was first run at 1½ miles, the same distance as the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris, on May 17, 1875, in front of an estimated crowd of 10,000 horse racing enthusiasts. The Dubai World Cup's most recent winner was the popular Pleasantly Perfect in 2004, and past winners have also included Moon Ballad, Street Cry, and Captain Steve - which have come from all over the world, including the US, Europe, and Asia.

Pleasantly Perfect was the Dubai World Cup 2004 winner, with Madaglia d'Oro finishing at second and Victory Moon at third.

Nad Al Sheba Racecourse Horse Racing History & Race Track Information

Nad Al Sheba Club
PO Box 52872, Dubai,
United Arab Emirates

Situated a mere 10 minutes from the center of Dubai at the United Arab Emirates, the Nad Al Sheba racecourse features a dirt track and a turf track. The 2,200 meter left handed dirt track was first laid out in 1986 and was resurfaced in 1997 before the running of the third Dubai World Cup. 21 meters wide, and accommodating up to 16 runners comfortably, the Nad Al Sheba dirt track has three chutes: the 2,000 meter chute used for the Dubai World Cup (Group 1), a 1,600 meter (1 mile) chute, and a 1,200 meter (3/4 mile) chute. From the 2,000 meter chute, horses in the Dubai World Cup race around two gradual left hand turns before entering the 600 meter (3/8 mile) finishing straight. The Nad Al Sheba turf track is a 2200 meter (11 furlong) left handed three turn course, inside which has a 2% camber on the straights and 4% camber on the turns.

The racecourse is part of the Nad Al Sheba Club, which is more than a horse race track as it really features an extensive range of horse racing, golf, and dining facilities. In fact, the club offers the only night golf in the Middle East - an 18 hole, fully floodlit golf course and driving range open until midnight and 10.00pm, respectively. The Nad Al Sheba's striking Millennium Grandstand offers various hospitality options and the best views of the horse racing action, while the Clubhouse features the casual and relaxed atmosphere of Spikes and the simplicity of Links Terrace. Other facilities include the Godolphin Gallery, Maktoum Grandstand, and function facilities.

Dubai World Cup Recent Winners and Past Race Results

Dubai World Cup 2004: On March 27, 2004, the Dubai World Cup presented the perfect occasion for a rematch between Perfectly Pleasant and Medaglia d'Oro after their duel in Breeder's Cup Classic 2003 at Santa Anita Park where the two were just a length and a half apart at the finish. Pleasantly Perfect tracked the leaders from the start of the $6 million race to a headway over 2 furlongs out before staying on well under pressure to win the Dubai World Cup 2004. Fleetstreet Dancer led in the early stages before being tracked down by Medaglia d'Oro, who took no chances and sent the 2-1 favourite of the race to the front early in the straight. Pleasantly Perfect, the second favourite at 5-2 in the UK betting prices, battled fiercely in the last 400 yards, with Medaglia d'Oro fighting back gamely in the final yards. Pleasantly Perfect proved too strong on the right and clinched the world's richest race at Nad Al Sheba by three quarters of a length. Victory Moon placed third at five lengths behind, and Grand Hombre ran a good debut race to claim the fourth place.
