Smarty Jones is 2/3 of the way to becoming the 12th Triple Crown winner, but he won't have it easy at Belmont. While only several of his prior Kentucky Derby and Preakness rivals have surfaced so far to try and stop him on June 5th at Belmont Park. Here is the latest list of probable starters for the Belmont, but expect it to change over the next few days, so keep checking back to see what's going on. Nothing represents throroughbred horse racing greatness than winning the Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes on a budding colt's third year. Below are must know tidbits to accompany yourself at parties and soirees celebrating Smarty Jones' Triple Crown bid. Go ahead, be the life of the party.
Triple Crown Winners

The Belmont Stakes is a gruelling 1 1/2 mile race, not many thoroughbred horses are asked to race this distance, just very demanding and taxing for the young colts. However, the way Smarty Jones rode the Preakness, where he seemed to be as relaxed and not even panting for breath, it is almost impossible to deny that we may finally have a Triple Crown winner after Affirmed. And I will gladly back up Smarty even at odds of 1-10. He is such a HORSE!

Big field to challenge Smarty Jones at Belmont Stakes Posted @ 12:12 by Webmaster
Triple Crown contender Smarty Jones might face an unusually large field in the Belmont Stakes when he attempts to become the first Triple Crown champion in 26 years.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner is likely to face several familiar foes, including Preakness runner-up Rock Hard Ten and third-place finisher Eddington.
Also being considered for the 1 1/2 -mile Belmont on June 5 are three horses trained by Nick Zito -- Birdstone, Royal Assault and The Cliff's Edge.
The Cliff's Edge, who was fifth in the Derby despite losing his two front shoes, was scratched from the Preakness with a sore right front foot. Zito said the colt may be ready for the Belmont.
Royal Assault won the Sir Barton on Saturday's Preakness undercard, and Birdstone was eighth in the Derby.
Other possible starters include Derby runners Master David (ninth), Tapit (12th), Castledale (14th) and Friends Lake (15th) ; Swingforthefences, Relaxed Gesture, Sinister G and Mustanfar.
The Peter Pan Stakes on Saturday will help determine the Belmont Park fate of several horses. Among those set for the Peter Pan are Master David, Friends Lake, Sinister G and Swingforthefences.
``Right now we are pointing him to the Belmont,'' Rock Hard Ten' trainer Jason Orman said. ``We will stay here at Pimlico until either Monday or Tuesday and ship Rock Hard Ten to New York then.''
Smarty Jones won the Derby by 2 3/4 lengths over Lion Heart, and the Preakness by a record 11 1/2 lengths over Rock Hard Ten,
The largest Belmont field was 15 in 1983, when Caveat defeated Slew o'Gold. In '96, there were 14 starters in the race won by Editor's Note. Last year, there were six starters when Empire Maker spoiled Funny Cide's Triple Crown attempt.

SMARTY JONES, away alertly, was taken in hand going past the wire the first time, tracked the leader while racing well off the rail into the backstretch, continued in hand to the far turn, launched his rally leaving the three eighths pole, angled to the inside of LION HEART mid way on the turn, drew on nearly even terms with that one approaching the quarter pole, took charge at the top of the stretch, quickly opened a commanding lead in mid stretch, extended his advantage when struck twice right handed leaving the furlong marker then drew off with authority under a vigorous hand ride.
ROCK HARD TEN, fractious behind the gate delaying the start for several minutes, was strung out six wide around the first turn, raced in mid pack while continuing wide down the backstretch, made a sharp move from outside to reach contention leaving the three furlong marker, angled to the inside mid way on the turn, followed the winner into the stretch but was no match for that one while clearly besting the others.
EDDINGTON, unhurried for a half while racing well off the rail, gradually gained five wide nearing the far turn, moved inside IMPERIALISM at the three eighths pole, circled five wide advancing into the stretch, altered course between rivals at the three sixteenths pole but failed to threaten while improving his position.
LION HEART was guided well off the rail while sprinting clear soon after the start, set a moderate pace while four wide down the backstretch, continued on the front while remaining well out from the rail around the far turn, relinquished the lead to the winner entering the lane then tired from his early efforts.
IMPERIALISM returned to the paddock prior to the post parade for a repair of his left front shoe, raced five wide around the first turn, continued wide in mid pack for six furlongs then lacked a late response when called upon.
SIR SHACKLETON, between rivals the first turn, chased the pace in the two to three path down the backstretch, angled to the inside while racing within striking distance to the top of the stretch then steadily tired thereafter.
BORREGO broke outward then steadied on heels soon after the start, saved ground to the quarter pole, angled out at the top of the stretch, raced between rivals past the eighth pole and came up empty.
LITTLE MATTH MAN was bumped and pinched back at the start, trailed for a good part of the way then failed to mount a serious rally.
SONG OF THE SWORD broke inward and bobbled at the start, raced close up for a half, made a run inside the winner to threaten nearing the far turn then gave way.
