We should have released this Del Mar feature article last week but we were more excited with handicapping and betting that we forgot about it. Our visitors are not complaining after a successful first week where we had our fair share of top choice winners and very nice payinig longshots!

Bing Crosby, Seabiscuit, and the Horse Racing Legend of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club
In 1937, legendary crooner Bing Crosby along with Hollywood cronies like Jimmy Durante and Pat O'Brien set out to follow a horse racing dream. They had built a nice little race track where they could go crazy horse betting all day and get crazier partying and hobknobbing all night, amidst the refreshing climate and cool ocean breezes of California. In the seaside city of Del Mar, just north of San Diego, the Del Mar Racetrack was opened for the first time to inspire awe from the horsemen and horse racing fans of America.
Hollywood luminaries the likes of Ava Gardner, Dorothy Lamour, and Lucille Ball came to grace the then-fast-rising Del Mar fairgrounds with their presence. Horse racing greats no less than William Lee "Bill" Shoemaker, Johnny Longden, Laffit Pincay, Jr., and more followed suit to grace the turf. In 1938, legendary horse Seabiscuit arrived to help immortalize the Del Mar Racetrack when it won in an epic race against Ligaroti.
Today, nearly 7 decades later, after $55 million worth of rebuilding the grandstands and $3.4 million worth of recent race track innovations, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club "where the turf meets the surf" is out to prove once again that it is no stranger to fame and legend. From July 21 through September 8, Racing Season 2004 of the world-famous Del Mar horse races will take place and make another bid for horse racing history.

In conjunction with opening day of Saratoga's 2004 thoroughbred horse racing meet, here's a treat to the rest of us who can't be at "the Spa", the beautiful Saratoga Race Course.

New York's First Potato Chip and a Race Track Making Horse Racing History
Saratoga Springs in New York is known in history as a turning point in American Revolution. It is known in Hollywood for inspiring films that starred the likes of Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, and Dustin Hoffman. It is even known as the site of mystical spring waters discovered by the Iroquois, and the first potato chip created by the chef at Moon's Lake House. But nowhere is Saratoga more remembered than for the Travers Stakes, the steeplechase, you know it, the race horses.
In 1863, Lizzie W. became the first thoroughbred to cross the finish line at a newly built race track in Saratoga, and she would not be the last of horses turned legends at the Saratoga Race Course. Man o' War, who suffered his only career defeat in 1919 at Saratoga, followed suit. Fourstardave, who won at Saratoga for eight years in a row, had a street in Saratoga Springs named after him when he retired.
Only two months ago, in June 2004, Saratoga thoroughbred Birdstone nabbed the championship title at the 136th Belmont Stakes. He now returns home for the Saratoga Race Course's Racing Season 2004, running from July 28 through September 6.
