Ashado sells for record $9 million at Keeneland Posted @ 5:28 by Webmaster
By MURRAY EVANS, Associated Press Writer November 7, 2005 LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Saying goodbye to Ashado proved to be tougher than the owners of the 4-year-old filly expected.
``She was sold with about 10 pounds of mints in her belly,'' said Jack Wolf, a member of Ashado's ownership group. ``Her sugar count is up pretty good.''
But as emotional as that farewell was, the price Ashado commanded during the Keeneland November Breeding Stock sale on Monday brought even more tears -- this time of joy. Ashado, the second-leading money winner among female horses, sold for a record $9 million.
John Ferguson, the buyer for Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the crown prince of Dubai, outlasted Irish bloodstock magnate John Magnier, the owner of Coolmore Stud, in a bidding process that lasted more than nine minutes in a packed, hushed Keeneland sales pavilion.
Ashado shattered the previous world record price for a female horse, set when Cash Run sold for $7.1 million during Keeneland's November sale two years ago. The price is the fourth-highest paid for a thoroughbred at auction.
The late Robert Sangster, a British owner and breeder, and several high-profile partners paid the record $13.1 million for Seattle Dancer at the Keeneland July Select Yearling Sale in 1985. Two years earlier, a Northern Dancer colt named Snaafi Dancer fetched $10.2 million from Aston Upthorpe Stud at the July sale.
Sheik Mohammed paid $9.7 million for a Storm Cat-Tranquility Lake colt earlier this year during the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Ashado ``is a very special horse,'' said Duncan Taylor, the president of Taylor Made Sales Agency, which consigned the filly. ``Not only was she bred great and not only did she run great but she's just so smart. When she walked into the ring, she just stood there watching the TV, watching the horse sell before her, just taking everything in.''
Ashado, trained by Todd Pletcher, won 12 of 21 races, including the 2004 Kentucky Oaks and Breeders' Cup Distaff, and was voted 3-year-old filly champion. She is a top candidate for champion older filly and mare this year.
The daughter of Saint Ballado, out of the broodmare Goulash, finished her career with $3,931,440 in earnings, second only to Azeri, who won $4,079,820. Ashado finished third in her final race, the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Belmont Park on Oct. 29. Had she won or finished second, she would have passed Azeri on the career earnings list.
Ferguson said Sheik Mohammed ``decided a long time ago this was a very special opportunity. He's a man who wants the very best, whether it's foals or mares. She quite frankly is an outstanding broodmare prospect and he was very keen to have her.''
So keen that it led to another Keeneland sales showdown between the interests of Sheik Mohammed and Magnier, whose representatives are fixtures at major auctions. Ferguson represented the sheik Monday, while Magnier did his bidding for himself.
During the Keeneland September sale, the sheik and Magnier stood on opposite sides of the entryway into the sales ring, bidding on the Storm Cat-Tranquility Lake colt before Magnier walked away, allowing the sheik's final offer to stand.
The drama was no less intense on Monday. Magnier sat in the sales pavilion while Ferguson stood near the sale ring's entryway, swapping bids. Bidding started at $1 million, stalled briefly at $3 million, then resumed a slow but steady climb.
As the bidding hit $8 million, auctioneer Ryan Mahan intoned, ``I've got to take a little breath here.''
Laurie Wolf, Jack Wolf's wife, understood why.
``I was in awe,'' she said. ``I don't feel like I was breathing for a few minutes.''
When the hammer fell, ending the sale, Laurie Wolf exited the sales pavilion both smiling and weeping while accepting congratulations from dozens of well-wishers.
``She deserved every penny,'' Laurie Wolf said.
Pletcher said he and Jack Wolf made a friendly wager before the sale. Wolf predicted the price would be $7.8 million. Pletcher had written his guess in a copy of Keeneland's sales book: $9,000,000.
``It was just a guess,'' the trainer said.
Pletcher said he had mixed emotions about Ashado leaving his care.
``You're sad any time a horse like this goes out of your barn,'' he said. ``But this is sort of the ultimate reward. This is what we're all trying to do.''
