Gulfstream Park Opening Day Posted @ 10:37 by Webmaster
Gulfstream Park 2005 Stakes Schedule 47 Stakes Worth $8,485,000
New Look, Same World-Class Thoroughbred Horse Racing Runs Jan. 3 – April 24
When Gulfstream Park kicks off its 2005 season on Monday, Jan. 3, spacious temporary accommodations and expanded, state-of-the-art racing surfaces will greet patrons with a glimpse of the redevelopment project designed to spark a renaissance in thoroughbred racing in South Florida.
Post time is 12:45 p.m. Admission is free throughout the meet.
Gulfstream Park will present 47 stakes worth $8,485,000 during its 86-day meet (Jan. 3 – April 24) in 2005. Thirty of the stakes are graded events, with sixteen of those races helping comprise four outstanding “Spectacular Saturday” cards that will be presented on the first Saturday of each month during the season. The third annual Sunshine MillionsTM on Saturday, Jan. 29 and the 54th annual Florida Derby on Saturday, April 2 again will highlight the season.
The new Florida Derby date marks a departure from the event’s traditional mid-March place on the calendar and allows the “Run for the Orchids” to anchor a series of Gulfstream stakes events designed to provide an optimal road for Triple Crown hopefuls.
Additional horse racing season highlights include the
Aventura Stakes,
the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector and
Hal’s Hope handicaps on Jan. 8;
the Donn Handicap (Grade 1),
Davona Dale Stakes (G2),
Deputy Minister Handicap (G3),
Holy Bull Stakes (G3) and
Old Hat Stakes (G3) on Feb. 5;
the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2),
Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2),
Bonnie Miss Stakes (G2),
Stonerside Forward Gal Stakes (G2) and
Swale Stakes (G2) on March 5;
and the Orchid Handicap (G2),
Pan American Handicap (G2),
Skip Away Handicap (G3) and
the Artax Handicap (G3) on April 2
Also, Turf-Vivor, one of the nation’s most popular handicapping contests, will be held at Gulfstream Park Friday, Feb. 25, through Sunday, Feb. 27.
Immediately following Gulfstream’s 2004 meet, demolition crews razed the old grandstand, clubhouse and parts of the barn area. Much of the barn area was rebuilt and a new turf course was constructed using Celebration Bermuda, a resilient strain of grass similar to that used on polo fields. The turf course is now 170 feet wide, more than double the width of the old course.
Similarly, the main dirt track was elongated from one mile to nine furlongs. Both racing surfaces have earned rave reviews from horsemen.
Temporary facilities erected next to the main track include deluxe air-conditioned tented pavilions (one containing dining amenities) with viewing decks, a Turf Club, rooms for the track’s largest bettors, a food court under an open-air tent and a seven-acre park area with benches and picnic tables. The new structures are scheduled to be completed before the 2006 season.
Walk-around tellers and eight wagering huts will enable attendees to wager on Gulfstream’s live races and on simulcast action airing from other top racetracks. Four Jumbotron viewing screens plus a bank of strategically placed television monitors will ensure that no one will miss out on any of the action.
Admission to the track will be free in 2005, with a $5 charge for admission to the Wagering Tent and a $20 admission charge for the Dining Pavilion, which includes gourmet buffet lunch, on weekdays. Weekend Dining Pavilion admission will be $25. Self-parking also is free, with valet parking available for $5.
The track will have three gates open this year for ingress and egress: Gate A at Hallandale Beach Boulevard, Gate B at S. Federal Highway and SE 3rd Street, and Gate F at NE 213 Street near the Target shopping center in the city of Aventura. Due to construction, Gate D, the former Clubhouse entry gate on S. Federal Highway, will not be open this year.
Monthly Agenda
Gulfstream will present a four-day-per week agenda in January (Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays dark.). Live racing exceptions are: Monday, Jan. 3 (Opening Day) and Monday, Jan. 17 (MLK Day). In February and March, the track will operate six days per week (Tuesdays dark), before reverting to a five-day per week schedule (Mondays and Tuesdays dark) in April.
Full-card simulcast will be offered seven days a week.
