***SATURDAY GAMES NFL PLAYOFFS Wild Card Weekend (1/8/05)***
St. Louis Rams (Wild Card Winner) @ Seattle Seahawks (NFC West Winner) 4:30 PM ET ABC
Breakdown: The Rams have to be one of the worst playoff teams in years, and the Seahawks are not much better. This will be the third time that these teams have met this season. Will it be a lucky charm for the Seahawks, who lost the previous two to the Rams? The first loss was the turning point of the season for the Seahawks, when they blew a 17-point lead at home and lost in OT to the Rams. Then in week 9, the Rams won in St. Louis in a game they controlled throughout.
Both teams' seasons have been erratic at best, with the Seahawks barely playing better than the Rams down the stretch. To be honest, both these teams have looked awful at times, and there is a true advantage to this game being played in Seattle because that very well could be the difference. Being a dome team, the Rams do not play very well outdoors, and there could be some weather factors in this one.
New York Jets (Wild Card Winner) @ San Diego Chargers (AFC West Winner) 8:00 PM ET ABC
Breakdown: Well, the Jets backed into the playoffs, but they could care less. They're in and have already beaten San Diego on the road earlier this season, so this Jets team will not be intimated by the Chargers' high-flying offense. The Chargers, though, have one of the best offenses in the NFL. This game could be a shootout if the Jets are able to move the ball against a pretty good Bolts defense.
The Chargers have had one of the best worst-to-first stories in recent memory, and have gotten contributions from many players this season, most notably second-year TE Antonio Gates, who didn't even play football in college. QB Drew Brees has found himself and is one of the premier signal callers in the game today. RB Ladanian Thomlinson is one of the best backs in the game, and the Chargers' defense is aggressive and hard-hitting.
The Jets have had a truly up-and-down season. At times, they have looked like world-beaters, and at times they have looked like a college team. The key to the Jets' success is QB Chad Pennington, who has received a lot of criticism for his decision-making this year. RB Curtis Martin, who won the rushing title at age 31 this year, will get his yards. The Jets' WRs and TEs will have to make catches, and Pennington will have to make good throws if the Jets are to have a chance in this one.
Race#7 is The Aventura Stakes, $125,000 Purse Race#8 is The Mr. Prospector Handicap (G3), $100,000 Purse Race#9 is The Hal's Hope Handicap(G3), $100,000 Purse

131st Kentucky Derby Purse now $2M Posted @ 10:32 by Webmaster
The Kentucky Derby, the oldest continuous sporting event in the United States, will have its purse doubled to two million dollars ($2,000,000), horse racing officials announced.
The increased purse moves the Kentucky Derby to a tie for second on the list of richest horse races in the US and it is the first prize hike since 1996.
The Breeders' Cup Classic carries a purse of four million dollars, while the Kentucky Derby joins the John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf and the Nextel Breeders' Cup Distaff as the only US races with a purse of two million dollars.
"The Kentucky Derby is one of the world's great sports events and our effort to raise its purse to two million dollars guaranteed is both a reflection of that status and an effort to solidify the foundation of this great race for many years to come," Churchill Downs president Steve Sexton said.
The 131st Kentucky Derby is scheduled for May 7, 2005 on hallowed racing grounds of Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It is the first leg of the $5M VISA Triple Crown horse racing special comprising of three most fabled races for three year olds, second is the Preakness Stakes in Pimlico at Maryland and the Belmont Stakes in New York where many horses have tried to become Triple Crown Horse Racing Champions, the last being Smarty Jones only last June 5, 2004.
