Who Will (Super) BOWL Over? Road to Superbowl XXXIX 2005 in Jacksonville, FL
And then there were four. On the NFC, we see a battle of the birds as the Philadelphia Eagles play host to the Atlanta Hawks, while the AFC will showcase the New England Patriots defending their conference title against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
AFC: New England Patriots -3 @ Pittsburgh Steelers (Total: 34)
After a technical demolition of the Indiana Colts and MVP Peyton Manning, odds on favorite New England are poised to make a third trip to the Super Bowl in four years. Standing in their way is dangerous host Pittsburgh, led by All-Offense Rookie Ben Roethlisberger.
What makes this such an intriguing match-up is that it was the Steelers who broke the Patriots NFL-record 21 game winning streak last October, as they manhandled the then unstoppable Pats 34-20, in Pittsburgh. The Patriots, led by low-key Quarterback Tom Brady, would want payback. Of course, it's easier said than done, as the Steelers hold a 9-0 record at home.
Granted that the Patriots didn't have Running Back Corey Dillon whenthey met last October, the Pats would have to contend with the NFL's best defensive team. But if New England thinks the Steelers can only play defense, they're in for a rude awakening. Pittsburgh always makes use of their rushing offense, as Jerome Bettis leads the offense with 13 Rushing Touch Down.
But the Patriots didn't get to where they are by being one-dimensional, too. Aside from the accurate field passes of quarterback Tom Brady and Corey Dillon's running game (1,635 yards, 13 TDs) the Pats are one of the best teams in terms of Rushing Defense (6th). And they carry a 6-2 road record to Pittsburgh, as well as experience in the playoffs.
So, what will happen when these two teams meet? Expect the Patriots to tighten-up on the Steelers's rushing game and limit mileage for Jerome Bettis. For the Steelers, pretty much the same thing, and play the type of defense they're known for. It's an evenly-matched conference showdown, and the only reason I'm picking New England to win this one is playoff experience.
NFC: Atlanta Falcons @ Philadelphia Eagles (-5.5, Total: 37)
The Falcons will try to invade the Eagle's nest, where the last three AFC championships have been held. If there's one thing going for Atlanta, its history. The Eagles are 0-3 in the last three NFC championships, and yes, as mentioned, they were all home games.
And if the pressure of losing three straight championship conference at home isn't enough, the equally improbable task of breaking the 22-year drought of any major championship for Philadelphia is riding on the Eagle's shoulders.
Led by Quarterback Donovan McNabb (3,871 yards, 31 passing TDs) the Eagles are hoping that they can fly higher than their opponent and finally land in the Super Bowl. But the dangerous Falcons of Michael Vick (2,313 yards, 14 TDs) would like nothing more than continue Philadelphia's string of bad luck, and get another chance at winning it all.
Laying claim to having the NFL's best rushing game(167 yards per game), expect the Falcons to take advantage of the Eagle's suspect rushing defense(16th) while the Eagles will try and keep the ball away from Vick's hand by taking advantage of their passing offense(7th)
One player the Eagles will sorely miss is Wide Receiver Terrell Owens (1,200 receiving yards, 14 TDs) The best weapon in the Eagles passing game, Owens is down with an ankle injury, and would most likely play if Philadelphia reaches the Super Bowl.
But in the end, Philadelphia's passing offense would probably be too much for the Falcons. Atlanta would challenge early in the game, but expect McNabb to find his receivers when it matters, and that the Eagles tough defense would prevent Vick from setting up any semblance of offense, as well as giving no room to run with the ball.

Field position and the ability to push through 3 pointers in the cold wind should be the order of the day as Pittsburgh has only gone over 3 of the last 10 and New England having gone under 6 of the last 9. The number will drop as we approach gametime, grab yourself the under now and cash in Sunday.

looking back to the October 31st Halloween Day contest between the Patriots and Steelers, we witnessed a complete domination by Coach Cowher’s crew, winning by a 34-20 margin. The lines maker that day posted New England as a solid three point favorite, and posted the total at 42. Well, the total was blasted to the over, just as the Patriots were blasted as road favorite.
So here comes the AFC Championship game rematch between the same two teams, at the same location, nearly three months later. This time, though the Pats are still posted at a solid -3 favorite, the total opened up at 37 and has been bet hard down to its current level of 34.5.
Logistically, my analysis goes something like this. The public, the sportscasters, the odds makers….all of them…..expect a very low scoring, hard hitting game because of the fact that the Patriots held the high powered Indianapolis offense to a single field goal. That, combined with the fact that Big Ben the rookie can no longer be trusted to throw the ball after his relatively poor showing last week against the Jets, leads one to believe that the clock will be spinning away as each team utilizes their running game and their excellent field goal kickers to decide this contest. Add in the fact that Patriots running back Corey Dillon didn’t play last October but now is running in high gear. To borrow a well known phrase from, ESPN’s Lee Corso, I say, “Not so fast my friend”. It seems to me that if I were a Patriot, and I was taking my best shot at winning this game, I would want to score early and often in a attempt to put the Steeler offense in a catch up position. Why? Because this would take Pitt out of a ball control running game and into a throwing, catch up mode that perhaps doesn’t fit their preferred style of play. By doing so, you can put extra pressure on Big Ben the rookie and really force the hand of the Steeler’s offensive coordinator into making play calls that he was hoping he didn’t have to make. The result of this scenario is:
a) an increased risk of turnovers, b) the increased chance of a big play, c) more frequent clock stoppage from an incomplete pass, d) more points scored, e) all of the above.
If your answer was “e” you have correctly mastered the above material and may proceed to make the above investment. Oh by the way, don’t forget that the New Englanders averaged nearly 30 points per game on the road this season.

This is a match-up of probably the two best defenses in the NFL, but oftentimes, this kind of contest is much higher scoring than anticipated as the defenses generate turnovers creating short fields for the offense.
For an example of this, look no further than the regular season meeting between these clubs here in Pittsburgh, won by the Steelers 34-20. Pittsburgh won the turnover war that day, but things should even out here, and few teams create more points off of turnovers than the Patriots do. In fact, New England is actually averaging 29.3 points per game on the road this season, where their games have an average combined total score of 48.7 points! Throw in the fact that they will have trouble running the ball effectively vs. the top ranked Pittsburgh rushing defense, forcing Tom Brady to throw the ball more, and there is even more potential for an offensive outburst here.
Now the Steelers rely on their running game and their defense, but they may have to come from behind in this game for one of the few times all season, putting young Ben Roethlisberger to the ultimate test. Also, the New England rushing defense is a staunch unit in its own right, so the Steelers may throw the ball more and run some play action right from the get-go in an attempt to open up some running lanes for the lethal Bettis/Staley duo. While this game may not approach the 54 points scored in the first meeting, we do feel that this contest should play in the 40s.

UNDER ON Falcons at Eagles I gave out the Under in the Eagles first Playoff game last weekend, and I'm expecting another low scoring battle in cold Philadelphia as their defensive unit has held opponents to just over 14-points per game this season at home and they held Atlanta to a combined 22 points during their two meetings last season. We find Atlanta at 0-6 (Over/Under) after gaining 175+ rushing yards in back-to-back games this year and 1-5 (Over/Under) on the road following a home win! 7* Play On UNDER (Phi/Atl)
