Spanish Chestnut favorite for Lane's End Stakes @ Turfway Park Posted @ 6:55 by Webmaster
FLORENCE, Ky. (AP) -- Spanish Chestnut, trained by Patrick Biancone and ridden by Gary Stevens, is the narrow favorite for the $500,000 Lane's End Stakes at Turfway Park on Saturday.
Nine 3-year-olds were entered Thursday for the 1 1-8 mile Grade 2 race for Kentucky Derby hopefuls.
Spanish Chestnut was made the 5-2 favorite by track oddsmaker Mike Battaglia and will start from the No. 8 post position. Magna Graduate, trained by Patrick Byrne and ridden by Jerry Bailey, was at 3-1, and drew the No. 2 post.
Nick Zito-trained Andromeda's Hero, the third choice at 5-1, is coming off a 2 1/2 -length win in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in February.
Spanish Chestnut won the one-mile San Rafael Stakes as the front-runner at Santa Anita in January, and set the pace before fading to finish third in 1 1-16 mile Santa Catalina Stakes in March. Both are Grade 2 races.
Earlier this month, Magna Graduate won the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes, Turfway Park's prep for the Lane's End.
The Rushaway Stakes, on Saturday's undercard, will feature Derby hopeful Proud Accolade, winner of the Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park in February.
Trainer Todd Pletcher held him out of the March 12 Louisiana Derby because of a minor illness, and chose the Rushaway for his comeback because it is one sixteenth of a mile shorter than the Lane's End.
``Obviously, our long-term goal does not just include the Rushaway Stakes, so hopefully we can use this as a stepping stone for some big races down the road,'' Pletcher said.
Mr Sword, a Lane's End longshot at 15-1, has won three straight races, a maiden and an allowance race at Laurel Park and a $100,000 optional claimer at Aqueduct. He is trained by Jennifer Pederson, whose New York Hero won the 2003 Lane's End at 14-1.
