Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, who's running? Posted @ 7:42 by Webmaster
Who's in and who's out of Florida Derby? Who knows?
By RICHARD ROSENBLATT, AP Racing Writer March 29, 2005
What if they held a $1 million race and hardly any horses showed up?
That scenario seems to be developing for the Florida Derby, a $1 million race for 3-year-olds and traditionally a key prep for the Kentucky Derby on May 7.
Bandini and Closing Argument, two colts expected to run in what already was shaping up as small field of six, are now iffy.
Todd Pletcher, who trains Bandini, said his colt missed a scheduled workout and might miss the race with an unspecified health problem. However, it would not prevent the Fountain of Youth runner-up from going in the Wood Memorial on April 9 or the Blue Grass on April 16.
Closing Argument trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said his Holy Bull Stakes winner missed a few days of training and was ``doubtful'' for the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby. The Blue Grass and Lexington Stakes on April 23 are options.
``We'll try to train him Wednesday, and if he does fabulous, there's a chance we might still enter,'' McLaughlin said on a conference call. ``This incident is minor, but it's terrible timing for a $1 million race.''
Pletcher chose not to speak on the call, but sent word of his intentions to a racing official.
At least four horses are still on target for the race, including Fountain of Youth winner High Fly and stablemate Noble Causeway -- two of trainer Nick Zito's loaded barn of Derby hopefuls.
High Fly, who missed a scheduled workout last week with a slight temperature, was on the track at Gulfstream Park on Tuesday, breezing four furlongs in 48 2/5 in company with Chief Commander. ``It was really good. I'm very happy,'' Zito said. ``He finished really good with the last quarter. He galloped out nice. It's a sigh of relief now. We've still got a couple of days. Let's hope he has a good couple of days and hopefully things will keep going our way.''
Noble Causeway, winner of an allowance race his last time out, galloped Tuesday. Also expected to be entered at Wednesday's post position draw are Papi Chullo, looking for his first victory and B.B. Best, third in the Fountain of Youth.
In addition to unexpected injuries, the small field might be attributed to a new date for the race -- three weeks later than its traditional time slot.
Now, the Florida Derby comes five weeks before the Kentucky Derby, leaving horses with a long layoff before the run for the roses. The last Derby winner coming of a layoff of five weeks or longer was Needles in 1956.
The date change, according to Gulfstream president Scott Savin, ``has allowed us to offer an evenly spaced progression of stakes for 3-year-olds that provides a terrific springboard for the Triple Crown. Our fans can look forward to a great race.''
Also, racing officials in South Florida are dealing with the contagious disease known as strangles that has forced top trainers to ship their horses out of Palm Meadows Training Center in Boynton Beach, Fla. Five cases of the bacterial disease have been confirmed.
Pletcher shipped 22 of his horses to Churchill Downs on Tuesday, and McLaughlin sent many of his to Keeneland. Zito, as well as Bobby Frankel, had many of their horses shipped to Kentucky last weekend.
High Fly and Noble Causeway were moved from Palm Meadows to Zito's Gulfstream stable.
Dr. Larry Bramlage, chief surgeon at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., said strangles is usually a minor problem and easily contained, but the timing of the outbreak has created greater concern.
``You have a lot of horses shipping from South to North and also competing in races like the Derby this time of year, which makes it an especially bad time,'' Bramlage said on the conference call.
