2005 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Posted @ 4:02 by Webmaster
Univ of North Carolina Tar Heels -2 vs. Illinois Fighting Illinis. Total @ 154
Here are two feature articles on tonight's blockbuster game between the Tar Heels and the Illinis. Don't forget that you can place your bet with our sportsbook sponsors
Illinois will win the 2005 NCAA Men's National Title
The North Carolina Tar Heels are favored to win the 2005 NCAA Men's Basketball National Title and beat the Fighting Illini of Illinois by at least 2 points.
The Tar Heels were able to overcome a sub-par 1st half performance from their 3rd year players, guard Raymond Felton and center Sean May to rally a comeback to beat Michigan State 87-71.
The key that gave the win for North Carolina coach Roy Williams and his boys was their tenacious defense, particularly in the second half. So impressive were the boys in blue from UNC defensively that they held Michigan State's Senior, Alan Anderson, scoreless in the second half.
The Michigan State Spartans, with their best player held scoreless, were outscored by the Tar Heels 54-33 in the final of two stanzas and ultimately ended Michigan State's campaign for a national title.
It was the same story on the other side of the bracket as Illinois clamped down on the Louisville Cardinals, particularly on Mr. Versatility, Francisco Garcia to come away with a lopsided 72-57 trashing.
The Cards' All-American Francisco Garcia was averaging at least 20 ppg. before his team clashed with the no.1 team in the country today and held him to a measly 4 points, miserably shooting 2-of-10 from the field.
This sets up a dream match-up, so to speak, between the two top two teams in America, the North Carolina Tar Heels with coach Roy Williams at the helm against Illinois coach Bruce Weber and his Fighting Illini.
This year's NCAA Championship game will be a classic as the two teams that were picked to win it all from the beggining of the NCAA Season will meet and determine who got game when all is said and done.
The Tar Heels are a good team behind Sean May and Rashad McCants, the latter coming back from an injury and was able to bring his team to the NCAA Championship game. But once you play in the biggest of games, the big boys come to play and that's what the Fighting Illini of Illinois are all about. With their core of players, Dee Brown, Deron Williams and Luther Head. Illinois is ranked no.1 this year, and they always prove why they are top dog whenever they are ranked as such with a .778 winning percentage, 7-2 all-time as a top seed.
This year's NCAA Championships could very well be a low-scoring ball game with both teams playing a defensive mindset as of late.
Expect a final score that will play around the 60 or 70 mark with Illinois coming out on top by at least 4 points.
Fittingly, it's the top two teams in the poll who will meet in college hoops title game - No. 1 (Chicago Regional champions) University of Illinois Fighting Illini vs No. 2 (Syracuse Regional winners) Unversity of North Carolina Tar Heels.
It's now time to take your pick. Both teams have passed the eye of the needle, enduring cardiac games in the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight and the Final Four so expect both squads to summon their last remaining strength and make one more push towards the national title.
If the views of renowed basketball experts and majority of online betting oddsmakers are taken into consideration, the Tar Heels are slight favorite to win it all only by a slim margin.
Though they are the major underdogs according to the polls (this is an AP No. 1 vs AP No. 2 matchup . . . for the first time since UCLA-Kentucky in 1975, by the way), UNC has enough talent and experience to handle the boiling pressure of a big time game such as this and has proven capability to step up a notch when it truly matters most. Most sportsbooks has North Carolina to win the crown by only two points. Latest on-line odds predict a collective score of 154 points for both teams.
Statistically, it is a virtual dead heat in the updated CNNSI survey with wagering fans voting almost evenly on both teams.
Let's have a rundown of both teams' statistical performances throughout the NCAA tourney: UNC is the highest scoring team in the tournament with an 86 pts./game clip while the Fighting Illini managed to score only 75.4pts/game. If the title match will be a free-for-all, up-tempo contest, the Tar Heels will be hard-pressed to beat. They run -- first, last, and always. They've been good for 88.4 ppg this season (more than 11 better than Illinois, by the way); and if the Illini (with their passing and defense) play the game the way it's supposed to be played, so do the Tar Heels (with their entertaining, aggressive approach to turning every rebound and turnover into a chance to break). On the defensive side, it is Illinois who has the upperhand as they are only allowing 64.6 pts/game while the Tar Heels gave up 70.4 pts/game. The Fighting Illini are doing it with defense. Deron Williams singlehandedly shut down the scoring machine of their last two opposing clubs namely Arizona's Salim Stoudemire and Louisville's Francisco Garcia. Added to that, they have Dee Brown who is the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
So in the end, who's the logical choice for your money? The game story: Offense vs. Defense. Tough call it is but we pick the Tar Heels to emerge victorious. They simply have the country's best first five and sixth man. The big names of each teams will most likely negate each other so it all boils down to coaching strategy – and we're sure UNC coach Roy Wiliams will finally earn his due after taking Kansas Jayhawks to two futile attempts in championship games (1991 and 2003). With due respect for what coach Bruce Weber's squad has accomplished this season, he has to be satisfied with his award as Coach of the Year and wait his turn for the ring next year.
