Something for GIACOMO Bashers
    Posted @ 7:09 by Webmaster

GIACOMO bashers rejoice! Bookmakers have the Kentucky Derby winner as an underdog vs 3rd place finisher Afleet Alex.

PINNACLE

GIACOMO (+160) vs. Afleet Alex (-180). Afleet Alex is a heavy favorite to finish better than Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo!!! Your $100 bet on GIACOMO wins $160, and you have to risk $180 to win $100 on Afleet Alex!

As to the question whether Giacomo will win the Preakness (must start), NO (GIACOMO will NOT WIN) is a heavy favorite at -$720 to win $100. While YES (GIACOMO will WIN) is a whopping underdog at +$650, your $100 will WIN $650 should GIACOMO WIN the PREAKNESS indeed. What are you waiting for? Place your Preakness bets now!

* ODDS subject to change without prior notice. This is a betting market, odds are determined by supply and demand.

Preakness deja vu: 2003 Preakness winner back in Pimlico
    Posted @ 6:46 by Webmaster

Funny Cide returns to Pimlico; eyes another G1 win

2003 Preakness winner Funny Cide returns to the track that gave him the chance of sweeping that year's Triple Crown. As a prelude to the 2005 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, 12 races (five of them are stakes races) will be featured on Friday including the $500,000 Pimlico Special (G1) and the $200,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2).

Funny Cide was a 2-1 favorite in last year's Pimlico Special but was scratched due to a respiratory illness. This year is a totally different story as Badge of Silver now carries the early favorite tag to win the one and three sixteenths mile race.

Funncy Cide won the 2003 edition of the Preakness Stakes after winning the Kentucky Derby but was denied of a Triple Crown Sweep by Empire Maker. The Barclay Tagg-trained gelding carries a top weight of 120 pounds and will still be ridden by regular jockey Jose Santos. After winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup last season, Funny Cide now lined himself for another G1 victory for the third straight year.

Complete Story at Sports Betting Index.

Giacomo Isn’t Scaring Away Challengers in Preakness
    Posted @ 4:33 by Webmaster

By GREG MELIKOV

HorsesWild Contributing Writer

Surprise Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo isn’t scaring away opposition in the 130th Preakness Stakes.

The second leg of the Triple Crown is on track to have the first full field of 14 since 1992 when Pine Bluff triumphed. However, there have been 10 runners or more in 12 of the last 13 years.

As many as nine of the horses that finished behind Giacomo in The Derby may run, including runner-up Closing Argument and third-place finisher Afleet Alex.

If there’s more than 14 horses entered, the top seven determined by graded earnings get in, including four others that finished off the board: Wilko (sixth), Nick Zito’s High Fly (10th), Noble Causeway (14th) and Sun King (15th), and High Limit (20th and last).

However, Zito says Noble Causeway likely will aim for the Belmont Stakes while trainer Bobby Frankel is undecided about running High Limit.

The next four are determined by earnings minus restricted races, including Greeley’s Galaxy (11th) and Going Wild (18th), plus one of several newcomers, Scrappy T, who won the Withers at Aqueduct.

The final three horses, determined by total earnings, didn’t run May 7: Galloping Grocer, third in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct who has lost his last four races; Malibu Moonshine, victorious in the Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico; and Hal’s Image, winner of Calder’s Unbridled Stakes.

The final berth is sought by long, longshot Golden Man, who captured an allowance race at Gulfstream.

Giacomo returned to Churchill Downs for a mile gallop on Wednesday after taking the second stakes in his career and returning the second highest payoff off in Derby history: $102.

Trainer John Sherreffs was happy with the workout. “He is really recovering well from the Derby. His coat looks great and he is eating well.”

His jockey, Mike Smith who watched the colt exercise from a backstretch viewing stand, said, “He wasn't lethargic, that's for sure. He was on his toes, looking around, playing."

Shirreffs was happy with the condition in which he found Giacomo after not having seen him since Saturday night. “He's eating up. I thought he went really well this morning. It doesn't look like he dropped too much weight since the Derby."

Giacomo will remain at Churchill Downs until next Wednesday, when he will be flown to Baltimore along with Greeley's Galaxy, High Limit, Wilko and Zito’s two horses.

Closing Argument jogged a mile at Belmont Park on Tuesday and later galloped another mile.

Afleet Alex, the first Derby horse to arrive at Pimlico, galloped 1 ˝ miles on the main track Thursday morning and later galloped another 1 ˝ miles.

“I think he'll have a little bit of an advantage training over the track for an extra few days,’ trainer Tim Ritchie said. “Every track is a little different, so the sooner you get to the track (to) run over it, I think has to help. He has the type of style that can win a Preakness.”
