Bad Weather Postpones Summit of Speed to Sunday

The Summit of Speed racing card was postponed 24 hours because of power and telephone outages in the Calder Race Course area by storms generated by Hurricane Dennis as it roared past Key West.


Calder President Ken Dunn made the decision early Saturday morning as utility companies were being contacted. While the track suffered no physical damage overnight and Southeast Florida wasn’t in the hurricane’s direct path, bad weather disrupted electricity and telephone capabilities.


The sixth running of eight sprint stakes worth $1.9 million was “too good a card to try to run it under these conditions,” Dunn said. “We’ll combine it with ItalianFest (special promotion) on Sunday.”
