Saint Liam goes for his third Grade 1 victory against seven challengers in Saturday’s 78th Whitney Handicap at Saratoga.
The 5-year-old son of Saint Ballado, the 7-5 morning line favorite, comes off a 2 ¾-length triumph in the Stephen Foster at 1 1/8 miles at Churchill Downs. His record is 3-2-1 at that distance. Regular rider Edgar Prado returns for trainer Richard Dutrow.
Another main rival, Commentator, coupled with Sir Shackleton at 9-5 and trained by Nick Zito, registered an eye-popping 16 ¼-length win, but that was in an optional claiming race at seven furlongs at Belmont.
The longest distance the 4-year-old son of Distorted Humor has scored at is a mile. But he is 2 for 2 at Saratoga. Javier Castellano gets the mount.
Sir Shackleton, who last made the winner’s circle at Gulfstream Park in March, posted his only victory at today’s distance last year in the West Virginia Derby. Gary Stevens climbs aboard.
Jockey John Velazquez decides to stay on Limehouse, 6-1, an uncoupled entry with Pollard’s Vision that’s trained by Todd Pletcher. The 4-year-old son of Grand Slam never recovered last out from a bad start in the Hollywood Gold Cup and finished fifth, snapping a two-race winning streak.
Jerry Bailey replaces Velazquez on Pollard’s Vision, who has only one victory in five trips.
The remainder of the field includes Eurosilver, trained by Carl Nafzger since last fall when he took over for Zito. The 4-year-old son of Distorted Humor last won in March when he took the Skip Away Gulfstream Park. The new rider is Robby Albarado.
The two outsider in the $750,000 event last scored in allowance racers earlier in the year: Swingforthefences, trained by Richard Violette with Eibar Coa in the saddle, and Wiggins, saddled by Dale Romans with Mark Guidry aboard.
